One by one the lobster boats head single file out of Rockport Harbor. There is a jetty on one side and the headlands, a rocky formation of land on the other. Once past this they are on their way to the open ocean and their lobster traps. It amazes me that they know where all their traps are. Few rely on maps but instead know that off this point or that bit of land they have a string of lobster pots with only a small colorful bouy to mark it's position. They pull in one trap at a time and check it for a lobster and when they find one they check it's length to make sure its a keeper and they band those with rubber bands. Two reasons for this, One is so that when they reach into the bin of water they don't lose a finger but more importantly so that the lobsters don't do any damage in the close quarters before they are weighed and inspected. A cull lobster (one with damage) doesn't fetch as high a price. #vistaphotography,#jefffolger,
